Medical Scrubs and Teacher Lab Coat Fabrics: Which One to Choose?

A white coat introduces the wearer at first glance: a doctor in the corridor, a teacher in the classroom, a researcher in the laboratory. But not every coat is the same, and depending on the area of use, season, and quality, coats can make the wearer feel very different. Is it comfortable while bending and reaching throughout the day? Does it hold its shape after being washed several times a week? Does it make you sweat in the summer? Does it still look neat at the end of the shift? The answer to these questions lies in choosing the right fabric.

In this guide, we introduce our five most preferred fabrics for medical and teacher coats, put their technical specifications side-by-side, and explain which one you should choose for each situation. You can access the stock and color options for all the fabrics mentioned here on their respective product pages.

What to Look for When Choosing Coat Fabric?

  • Opacity: White fabric can reveal the color of the clothing underneath and seam allowances. As the weight and weave density increase, the fabric becomes more opaque.
  • Flexibility: For movements requiring flexibility during examinations or operations, such as reaching for a blackboard or constantly raising arms, fabrics with Lycra (elastane) do not pull at the shoulders and back.
  • Durability in washing: Coats are washed frequently. Fabrics with a high polyester content maintain their color and form for a long time and resist yellowing.
  • Breathability: Cotton and viscose content manage sweat better. This makes a difference, especially in hot climates and during long shifts.
  • Wrinkling: Poly-viscose fabrics remain neat throughout the day. Cotton blends wrinkle a bit more easily but are easily smoothed out with ironing.
  • Appearance: A matte and diagonally lined surface (gabardine) or a smooth, slightly shiny surface (alpaca)? This depends entirely on the institution's or the individual's style.

3. Lycra Poly-Viscose Alpaca

Lycra Poly-Viscose Alpaca white fabric

  • Content: 75% Polyester, 22% Viscose, 3% Lycra
  • Weight / Width: 190 g/m² / 150 cm

5. Terry Cotton

Terry Cotton white fabric

A polyester and cotton blend, this is a lightweight and breathable classic coat fabric. At 110 g/m², it is by far the lightest in our selection. The cotton content comforts the skin and prevents sweating, making it the most comfortable option in hot months and warm cities like Antalya. It is also our most economical fabric.

  • Content: 65% Polyester, 35% Cotton
  • Weight / Width: 110 g/m² / 150 cm
  • Highlights: Lightest, coolest, and most economical option
  • Care: 30°C low spin, max 110°C iron, dryer-safe
  • For whom: Summer season coats, bulk school orders, intern and student coats

Note: Due to its thin structure, white might show through slightly. Since the coat is worn over clothing, this is usually not an issue; if dark clothing will be worn underneath, take this into account. Due to its cotton content, it wrinkles slightly more easily than the others but straightens out easily with ironing.

Care Tips to Extend the Life of Your White Coat

  • All five of our fabrics are suitable for washing at 30°C on a low spin cycle. Wash whites separately from colored items.
  • For Lycra-containing fabrics (Serap Lycra Gabardine, Lycra Poly-Viscose Alpaca) and Terry Cotton, the ironing temperature should be at most 110°C. High heat will gradually reduce the elasticity of the Lycra.
  • Oğuz Bahar Gabardine and Oğuz Super Alpaca can be ironed up to 150°C. To prevent shine, iron them inside out.
  • Tumble dry Serap Lycra Gabardine on a low heat setting.
  • If your institution has higher temperature washing or disinfection procedures, we recommend testing the fabric with a small piece before bulk production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fabric is preferred most for lab coats?

It varies depending on usage. Does white lab coat fabric show through?

Serap Lycra Gabardine and Oğuz Bahar Gabardine do not show through thanks to their tight weaves. Alpacas are opaque on their own. Terry-cotton, however, may show through slightly in white due to its thin structure.
