Frequently Asked Questions

Scuba what is fabric?

Scuba fabric is a type of technical fabric produced with a double-layered knitted structure and a high elastane (Lycra) content; it is firm, supportive, and shape-retaining. It gets its name from its use in diving suits due to its body-hugging and supportive structure.

Scuba fabric has a higher GSM (grams per square meter) compared to swimwear fabric. However, this doesn't necessarily mean the fabric is thick; scuba fabrics are produced in various thicknesses, including thin and thick options. Their common characteristic is that they all exhibit a structured and voluminous drape, rather than being flowy.

Key Characteristics of Scuba Fabric

- Higher GSM than swimwear fabric, providing a firmer feel.

- High elasticity, hugging the body tightly yet controllably.

- Supportive and shaping structure, enhancing contours.

- Low drape, not fluid.

- Smooth and even surface, creating crisp silhouettes.

- Durable, resistant to sagging and deformation.

Types of Scuba Fabric (by Thickness)

Thin Scuba Fabric

- Firmer than swimwear fabric; lighter than classic scuba.

- Fits the body without creating excessive volume.

- Preferred for bodysuits, dresses, stage costumes, and jumpsuits.

- Offers a more elegant and controlled silhouette.

Thick Scuba Fabric

- Has a denser and fuller base.

- Provides maximum support and structure.

- Suitable for designs requiring a skirt, dress, or jacket form.

- Clearly shapes body contours.

When Should Scuba Fabric Be Preferred Over Swimwear Fabric?

Swimwear fabric and scuba fabric are often confused, but their intended uses differ.
In the following situations, scuba fabric is a more appropriate choice than swimwear fabric:

- If a firmer and more shape-retaining look is desired.

- If the costume or garment needs to sculpt the body's contours.

- If sagging, ripples, or excessive stretching are undesirable.

- If architectural and clean-lined designs are aimed for.

- If a more secure and stable structure is sought for stage or daily wear.

- While swimwear fabric mostly offers a second-skin feel, high shine, and maximum flexibility; scuba fabric provides control, support, and structure.

Where is Scuba fabric used?

Dresses & Skirts: For full and defined silhouettes
Bodysuits & Jumpsuits: Provides a supportive and secure fit
Stage & Costume: Costumes that are form-fitting and adapt to dance and movement.
Evening Wear: Strong linings

Why is Scuba fabric preferred?

It has a higher grammage than swimwear fabric, giving it a fuller drape.

Thin and thick alternatives adapt to different design needs.

Its shaping and supportive structure enhances the body's form.

Its low drape creates a clear and professional silhouette.

Offers secure use in stage and everyday wear.

Does it pull?

Since it is a 100% natural fabric, it may shrink, attention should be paid to the first wash. If possible, the first wash should be done before sewing.

Does it wrinkle? Can it be ironed?

Since it is a natural fabric, it wrinkles especially after washing. Although it does not wrinkle as much as Linen in daily use, it will wrinkle enough to require ironing again when taken out of the suitcase.

What are the care instructions?

Do not tumble dry

Suitable for washing at 30° on a low spin cycle

Bleach Should Not Be Used

No Iron

Is a primer required?

Light colors may require lining as they will be slightly see-through. Voile lining can be used as lining.
