It is typically made from 100% cotton, cotton-polyester blends, or lycra (elastic) cotton yarns. With its smooth texture, matte sheen, and breathable structure, it is frequently preferred in both apparel and home textiles.

Poplin, historically derived from a weave called "papeline" in the Avignon region of France, is known today in the fabric world for its balanced texture and shape-retaining properties.
